Birla Institute of Technology Mesra (commonly known as BIT Mesra) is a deemed university established in 1955 by the leading industrialist and philanthropist, BM Birla. It was granted autonomous status in 1972. BIT Mesra is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Apart from the main campus Mesra, BIT also offers several courses in off-campus modes. BIT’s off-campuses are at Allahabad, Noida, Jaipur, Lalpur, Deoghar, Patna, and Kolkata. BIT Mesra is ranked 53 under the 'Engineering' category and 71 under the 'University' category by the NIRF Rankings 2023. It offers over 60 courses across 8 streams. Over the years, the institute has set up its centres at various locations across the country and offshore centres in UAE and Oman. BIT Mesra has 17 departments offering UG, PG, and doctoral courses across Engineering, Science, Management, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Hotel Management streams.
